Short Stories
In English this Term, our 5/6 students have been immersed in suspense writing. They examined how authors create atmosphere and tension through precise vocabulary, sensory detail, personification, sentence length, pacing and the careful release of information. Students then applied these techniques to their own writing, making deliberate choices to keep their readers engaged and wondering what might happen next...

The sunlight shone through the wide kitchen windows onto the tattered old book that sat in Maddy’s lap. It seemed like she had read it a thousand times before, though if she was realistic it was probably more like twenty times. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sounds of the neighbours grew silent. The only noise was the flick of the light switch as the house grew darker and darker.


Fragile
Augrum watched the fields of wheat, a placid yellow ocean broken only by the crooked fence in the wind. Augrum was cleaning up the neglected attic, which could barely hold his weight, instead of playing with his family. Glancing up, he saw his family picture lying in the corner of the attic, so distant and cold. Tears swallowed his vision, but he stopped as a knock erupted at the door. Looking outside, he saw that no one was there.
